Chiko Miyagi McCormac, 92, of Hope Mills, passed away on Sunday, April 19, 2026.
Born on April 1, 1934, in Okinawa, Japan, Chiko will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and GG.
Chiko was preceded in death by her husband, James E. McCormac Jr., and eight siblings in Okinawa. She leaves behind her daughters, Virginia Small (Roger) of Hope Mills and Susan McCormac of Brooklyn, NY; four grandsons, Kyle (Mary) of Cary, Christopher of Apex, Tyler (Keyanna) of El Paso, and Chance of Southern Pines; three great-grandchildren, Eloise Grey, Levi Monroe, and Maleah Leonna; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews in both Okinawa and North Carolina.
Nothing pleased Chiko more than feeding her family, especially when it involved cooking her world-famous egg rolls. An avid gardener, she took great pride in her indoor and outdoor plants and enjoyed doing yardwork even in her 90s. She spent many years volunteering at Hope Mills Sunshine Center, where she taught seniors how to make flower arrangements. She did practically every craft imaginable, from sewing, crocheting, and quilting to drawing and making ceramics. Her favorite TV shows were the craft and cooking programs on “Channel 4,” the PBS station.
A memorial service celebrating Chiko’s long and full life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation in memory of Chiko McCormac to PBS North Carolina (UNC TV) at donate.pbsnc.org or to the Cape Fear Botanical Garden at P.O. Box 53485, Fayetteville, NC 28305.
