Clyde Elery Hammond, 85, was called home to be with the Lord on July 22, 2025. Born on July 28, 1939, in Robeson County. He was the son of the late George Asbury and Mae Belle Gause Hammond.
A man of deep faith, Clyde lived a life of quiet strength, humility, and service. After graduating from high school, he attended NC State University and later the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He devoted 32 years of public service to the Cumberland County Health Department, where his commitment to community health left a lasting mark.
Clyde made Fayetteville his home with his beloved wife of 54 years, Sadie Hammond, who preceded him in death. He later found love again and is survived by his devoted wife, Annette.
Clyde will be remembered not only for his steadfast faith but for his passion for sharing God's love with others. He served faithfully in ministry to small churches, provided comfort to the sick and elderly through hospice work, and regularly visited nursing homes to offer encouragement through scripture and hymns—especially his favorite, Blessed Redeemer, which he sang with heartfelt joy.
His compassion extended into advocacy, serving as an ombudsman for local nursing homes, and each year he worked tirelessly at the county fair to uphold food safety standards. In recognition of his decades of public service, Clyde was awarded the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine—one of North Carolina’s highest civilian honors.
He was a proud father to Tim (Debi), Amanda (Ryan) Bane, and Jenny, and a treasured grandfather to Cameron, Jaycen, Lauren, Alyson, James, and Liam. He is also remembered with love by his stepdaughter, Karen Russo, and her family.
He leaves behind his loving sisters, Susie (Terry) Wilkerson, Doris (Wayne) Horne, and Sondra (Clifton) Guyton; brother-in-law, Lacy Faryl Smith; and sister-in-law, Nancy Hammond.
Clyde was preceded in death by his cherished first wife, Sadie; his sister, Ann Smith; and his brothers: David, Elton (Millie), and Marvin (Margaret).
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the many friends who offered their love, prayers, and support throughout Clyde’s illness and passing.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Clyde’s memory with a contribution to the Ann Hammond Smith Annual Scholarship at Bladen Community College, established in his sister’s name, or to The Gentiva Foundation, in recognition of his lifelong commitment to education and service to others.
