Born in Garrett County, Maryland, Douglas is the son of Wilda Smith Helmick of Fayetteville and the late Charles Hubert Helmick.
He is survived by his mother, one sister, Tresea Helmick Adams of Fayetteville, brothers, Paul Helmick of Hope Mills and Derek Helmick of Charleston, SC; nephew, Matt Helmick of Hope Mills, and niece, Morgan Marshburn of Fayetteville.
