SSG Michael Emmanuel Swinton

Staff Sergeant Michael Emmanuel Swinton was born on June 30, 1996, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to Christel Swinton and Willie Shaun McMillian. From an early age, Michael was known for his intelligence, adventurous spirit, and ability to make lasting friendships wherever life took him. Throughout his childhood, he lived in North Carolina, New York, Alabama, and Utah, experiences that helped shape the resilient, compassionate, and determined man he would become.

Michael was a proud big brother who deeply loved his siblings and treasured the bonds he shared with his family. He was blessed with mentors, lifelong friends, and relatives who helped shape the values of loyalty, integrity, and service that defined his character.

Inspired by family members and close friends who served before him, Michael enlisted in the United States Army in 2017. He completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, before beginning a military career that he served with pride for nearly nine years. His assignments included Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Bragg, North Carolina, as well as deployments to Kuwait, Bahrain, and Iraq. Michael served with courage, humility, and unwavering dedication, earning the respect and admiration of his fellow Soldiers and leaders alike.

While stationed at Fort Hood, Michael welcomed his son, Geremy Michael Swinton, into the world in March of 2020. Becoming a father changed his life in the most profound way. He embraced fatherhood with patience, gentleness, and unconditional love, cherishing every moment he spent with his son.

While serving in Bahrain, Michael met the love of his life, Mia “Mimi” Gonzalez. What began as a friendship quickly grew into a love built on trust, laughter, unwavering devotion, and unconditional love. They were married on September 30, 2021, and together built a life centered on faith, family, and supporting one another through every season of life.

Their family grew with the birth of their daughter, Alëía L. Gonzalez-Swinton. Michael treasured every moment he spent with both Geremy and Alëía. Being “Dad” became the title he cherished most. Whether reading bedtime stories, playing games, sharing laughs, or simply spending time together, Michael poured his heart into fatherhood. His children were his greatest joy, and there was nothing he loved more than being with them.

In 2025, Michael returned to Fort Bragg before deploying once again to Iraq. As he had done throughout his military career, he answered the call to serve with courage, honor, and selflessness while looking forward to returning home to the family he loved so deeply.

On July 19, 2026, while serving in Erbil, Iraq, Staff Sergeant Michael Emmanuel Swinton made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country. His selfless devotion to duty and his willingness to serve others reflected the character that defined his entire life.

Michael will forever be remembered for his contagious laugh, adventurous spirit, quick wit, and generous heart. He had a remarkable ability to make people smile, offer encouragement, and make everyone feel welcome. He was dependable, loyal, compassionate, and always willing to stand beside those he loved. Whether as a Soldier, husband, father, son, brother, uncle, or friend, Michael lived with integrity and loved with his whole heart.

Above every title he held, the ones he treasured most were husband and father. His greatest accomplishments were not measured by rank or awards, but by the love he gave his family, the example he set for his children, and the countless lives he touched through his kindness, humility, and unwavering character.

Michael leaves behind his devoted wife, Mia “Mimi” Swinton; his beloved children, Geremy Michael Swinton and Alëía L. Gonzalez-Swinton; his mother, Christel Swinton; his father, Willie Shaun McMillian; his sisters, Mikayla and Angelina; his brothers, Edwin and KShawn; nieces, nephews and extended family; his brothers and sisters in arms; and countless friends whose lives were forever changed by knowing him.

Although Michael’s earthly journey ended far too soon, his love, laughter, strength, and selfless spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His memory will forever be a blessing, and his sacrifice will never be forgotten.
