With deepest sorrow, we announce the passing of Suzanna T. Smith, lovingly known as “Sue,” who departed this life peacefully on May 26, 2025, surrounded by those who loved her most.
Born on March 15, 1939, in Fayetteville, NC, to George Herman Truelove and Goldie Truelove, Sue was the beloved wife of the late Fred L. Smith Sr. Together, they raised five children and built a life grounded in faith, family, and hard work on their cherished family farm.
Sue was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a faithful servant of God. She spent much of her life crafting, cooking, and gardening—always creating something beautiful or delicious.
Over her 86 beautiful years, she brought joy to all who knew her. A comfort to many and a joy to all, Sue dedicated her life to caring for her family, her friends, and her community.
Sue’s faith was the foundation of everything she did. Her home was a sacred space—filled with comfort, happiness, and the warmth of togetherness. Her door was always open, and inside, there was always something for everyone: a delicious home-cooked meal, a sweet dessert, or even just a piece of candy.
She was the heart of the family, the one who brought everyone together. Every meal in her home began with a blessing, and every visit was filled with love and ended with a hug. Her warmth, generosity, and kindness made her home a haven for generations.
Sue taught her grandchildren and great-grandchildren the value of strength, patience, and compassion, as well as the importance of beginning and ending each day with prayer. Her legacy of love, faith, and family will continue to inspire all who knew her. A loving and remarkable woman until the very end, she will be deeply missed.
Sue is survived by her loving daughter, Marcella Smith-Nieves (Americo) of Virginia Beach, VA, and her four sons: Fred L. Smith Jr. (Valerie) of Parkton, NC; Sandy S. Smith (Donna) of Wade, NC; Michael W. Smith (Sheila) of Parkton, NC; and Anthony W. Smith (Tammy) of Parkton, NC. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, all of whom were deeply blessed by her love, wisdom, and unwavering devotion.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
